About Volta Health
Volta Health is building the first true operating system for student health. Our platform connects universities, university health services, and the broader health coverage ecosystem in a way no other solution does. We automate compliance, insurance, and billing for colleges and universities across the country.
We work with institutions directly and through a growing network of insurance brokers and carriers. Our technology is AI-native, our client base is expanding rapidly, and our land-and-expand strategy dramatically increases revenue per client over time. Volta is not a slow-moving enterprise vendor. We are a startup building something transformative for a market that has been underserved by technology for decades.
*Our Mission: We simplify health and wellness operations by connecting institutions, health networks, and student needs into one seamless system, ensuring every student is covered, compliant, and cared for.
Position Overview
*A Membership Manager lives at the intersection of client trust, product intelligence, and AI-driven operations. Externally, you are warm, credible, and deeply invested in your clients' success. Internally, you are analytical and direct, connecting dots across accounts, framing problems that drive product decisions, and building the automations that scale how we operate. You need to be all three.
Volta is hiring a Product + AI Technical Strategy Manager (dubbed Membership Manager) to own end-to-end client experience. This is a foundational hire.
This is not a traditional customer success role, product or engineering role. It sits in between. This role is designed for product people who want direct ownership of client outcomes, or for technical account managers who want to actually build, not just escalate.
You will be the person our clients trust when something isn't working, and the person our product team relies on to explain what's actually happening in the field and what needs to change. You need to be warm enough that a health center director feels like they have a true partner, and sharp enough that you can diagnose a problem on a live call and explain it clearly to both the client and the engineering team, and resourceful enough to build the tools and automations that make the operation scale.
A note on the environment: we serve clients ranging from small liberal arts colleges to large university systems. The work is operationally demanding (institutional deadlines are immovable), technically complex (healthcare data, insurance workflows, real-time compliance), and genuinely important. Students cannot access care if these systems fail. The right candidate thrives at the intersection of technical depth and client empathy, earns trust quickly, and performs well where outcomes matter more than process.
What You'll Own
Client Relationships
• You are the primary point of contact for your accounts. Your clients know your name and have your number. Your portfolio will include a mix of returning clients in steady state (lighter touch, monitoring, periodic check-ins) and new clients going through their first implementation (intensive, daily engagement during onboarding and enrollment season).
• You own the relationship through the full lifecycle: implementation, peak season, steady-state operations, and renewal. You run regular check-ins with client contacts. These are substantive working sessions, not status update calls. You come prepared with data on their account, you surface issues before they have to ask, and you leave with clear next steps.
Implementation and Onboarding
• For new clients, you lead the implementation: platform configuration, data setup, workflow design, and staff training.
• You coordinate across our internal team (engineering, product, operations) to make sure the client's program is set up correctly and on time.
• You understand each client's specific requirements and translate those into platform configuration without needing engineering support for every step.
• You own the timeline. If something is behind, you flag it early and adjust. You do not wait for the client to ask why something isn't done.
Problem Solving and Product Intelligence
• Triage client issues live, distinguishing between user error, data issues, process gaps, and product bugs. Provide clients with specific, informed answers during the conversation.
• Identify recurring themes across your portfolio and synthesize them into actionable insights for the product team. Connect individual client reports to systemic root causes.
• Frame client feedback in terms the engineering and product teams can act on. Translate operational observations into specific, scoped problem statements that drive roadmap decisions.
• Proactively flag at-risk accounts to leadership with context, business impact, and a recommended response plan.
• Identify new opportunities to automate manual processes across your portfolio; then build and configure AI-powered workflows that handle the processes.
• Monitor AI agents and automated systems for exceptions and patterns. Own resolution of edge cases that require human judgment. Continuously improve AI agent performance based on exception patterns and client feedback.
What "Technical" Means in This Role
You are not a software engineer. But you should be able to have a peer-level conversation with the product and engineering team about why something in the product isn't working, diagnose issues across our platform and its integrations, and build AI-powered automations to improve how we operate without needing engineering support.
This Role May Not Be For You If
• You prefer a clear separation between client-facing work and technical problem-solving rather than doing both simultaneously
• You thrive in roles with a single deep focus area rather than managing a broad portfolio of accounts with competing priorities
• You are looking for a pure relationship management role without product or technical ownership
• You need fully built-out playbooks and processes before you can operate effectively
• You prefer to manage relationships at arm's length rather than being deeply embedded in your clients' operations
• You use AI tools passively rather than building and exploring with them
Where You Might Be Coming From
We're open to candidates from a range of backgrounds, including:
• Technical Account Managers or Technical CSMs at B2B SaaS companies in regulated industries (healthtech, fintech, insurtech, compliance, benefits/HR tech, edtech)
• Implementation managers or onboarding leads who stayed close to clients post-launch
• Solutions engineers or solutions consultants who want to own the full client lifecycle
• Operations leads at TPAs, benefits administrators, or insurance platforms who want to move to the product side
• Product managers who want to own client outcomes directly rather than influence them through a roadmap
• Operations or CS professionals who have built internal tools and automations using AI
What We're Looking For
• 3-5+ years in a client-facing technical role at a B2B company, ideally in a regulated industry
• Experience owning a portfolio of named institutional or enterprise accounts end-to-end
• Demonstrated ability to learn complex products quickly and operate with deep product knowledge
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with comfort working through ambiguous or technical issues in real time
• Organized and disciplined, able to manage multiple accounts with competing deadlines
• Clear communicator in writing and verbally, with both technical and non-technical audiences
• Hands-on experience building AI-powered workflows, configuring agents, or using AI coding tools to automate operational processes. You don't just use AI. You build with it.
What Will Make You Stand Out
• You've been the person clients asked for by name, not only because you were the friendliest, but because you were the one who actually understood their situation and got things done
• You've identified a systemic product issue from a pattern of client reports and driven the fix through the product team
• You've managed a client through a crisis and come out with their trust intact or stronger, because you gave them real answers, not just reassurance
Location
We're based in New York and strongly prefer candidates in and around the Tri-State area. This role involves close collaboration with leadership and the broader team, and we believe that works best with regular in-person time.
Compensation and Benefits
• Competitive salary commensurate with experience
• Significant equity stake
• The basics: health insurance, unlimited PTO
• An incredible, fun work environment and close-knit team
Why Volta
• The mission is tangible. Our software directly affects whether young adults can access healthcare. This isn't ad-tech or another B2B SaaS dashboard - it's infrastructure that matters..
• You're building the function, not filling a seat. This is the first hire for this role. There's no existing team, no inherited process, no playbook. You design how it works.
• The feedback loop is immediate. At most companies, client insights go into a feature request queue and maybe get prioritized next quarter. Here, you see a problem in the field and you're in the room shaping the response the same week. You also have the tools to build the fix yourself.
• The clients are people you'll actually like working with. Health center directors and university administrators who care about their students. Not procurement teams running vendor evaluations.
• AI-native culture: You'll build with AI tools that most companies are still just talking about. Every team member, including leadership, actively uses AI coding tools, agents, and automations in their daily workflow.
• Ownership, not just a title: Meaningful equity in a company with accelerating revenue, expanding clients, and a market with almost no modern competition.
